The result of this geographic and climatic uniqueness is the typical local red wine. Distinctive and of a first class quality, looked after according to the type of grape, by the winemakers on numerous vineyards - the agricultural estates with their picturesque vineyards, which cover a total area of over 2,300 hectares from the southern foothills of the Ödenburger mountains to the Günser mountain range, are undoubtedly an indispensable characteristic of central Burgenland. The red wine festivals and the farm festivals are always something very special. It is always an event when the winegrowers invite you to their winery!
The wine growers in central Burgenland work together and like to duke it out at various wine awards from wine associations and trade magazines, for points and titles. With these awards, they then decorate the fine labels of their wines. It is an absolute must, when staying in Burgenland, to visit one of the wine shops, where you are invited to taste their best wines. A look in the wine cellar is also part of a visit to a winemaker, where you can then box up your favourites and pay the direct sale price.
First mentioned as such in a document in 1218, it is one of the oldest winegrowing communities in Burgenland. The Sonnberg is the wine mountain, its entire surface area, around 180 hectares, has been planted with vines since the beginning of the 13th century. The vineyard portrays the history of the place, which is still considered an insider tip among wine connoisseurs. In Lutzmannsburg there are 18 businesses that fill bottles with wine. The “Weinblütenfest am Sonnberg”, in mid-May, and the weekly wine market in Dorfanger (weekly from the beginning of May until the start of September), all make up the experiences, which you should be a part of!
The typical local cuisine of Pannonia in local bars, guesthouses, restaurants and Michelin Star restaurants, running through the country, will not leave any gourmets wishes unfulfilled! Nor the wishes of those of prefer something more down-to-earth. The Pannonian cuisine mainly uses local grains. The excellent wine from Blaufränkischland are a sought-after noble ingredient in this exquisite cuisine.
